A Night at the Trades House

An Upcycling Fashion Challenge in collaboration with Shelter Scotland

Project Overview

A Night at the Trades House was an upcycling fashion challenge created by SR:D in partnership with Shelter Scotland, demonstrating how fashion can be a powerful force for social and environmental change.

Inspired by the historic legacy of Glasgow's Trades House and Scotland's rich tradition of craftsmanship, the project invited designers from across Scotland to transform donated clothing and textiles from Shelter Scotland's charity shops into contemporary, high-fashion eveningwear. By reimagining pre-loved materials, the challenge celebrated Scotland's heritage of making, showcased the creative potential of circular fashion, raised awareness of sustainable design practices, and supported Shelter Scotland's vital work tackling homelessness.

The Challenge

Working exclusively with reclaimed materials sourced from Shelter Scotland, participants were challenged to create runway-ready eveningwear that balanced exceptional craftsmanship with contemporary design. Inspired by the skilled trades that helped shape Glasgow's history (including weaving, tailoring, embroidery and textile craftsmanship), designers were encouraged to reinterpret traditional techniques through a modern lens.

Innovation, thoughtful construction and the imaginative transformation of discarded textiles formed the heart of the judging criteria, demonstrating that sustainability and creativity can work hand in hand to produce garments of outstanding quality and originality.

The Showcase

The challenge culminated in an exclusive evening celebration within the historic surroundings of Glasgow's Trades House, bringing together designers, industry professionals, partners and supporters to celebrate innovation, craftsmanship and conscious fashion.

The winning collections were unveiled on the runway before guests were invited to shop a carefully curated collection of the very best vintage, designer and occasionwear, hand-picked from Shelter Scotland's charity shops. From luxury labels to one-of-a-kind finds, the collection showcased the exceptional quality and value that can be discovered through pre-loved fashion. The evening proved to be a resounding success, with three brides-to-be finding their perfect wedding dresses, an unforgettable reminder that extraordinary fashion can have both a story and a positive impact.

The event generated significant media coverage, highlighting the role Scottish designers can play in shaping a more sustainable future for the fashion industry and demonstrating how collaboration between the creative and charity sectors can create meaningful cultural, environmental and social impact.
