Shelter Scotland x SR:D Fashion for Social Change award

In 2022 housing and homelessness Charity Shelter Scotland and Festival organisers, fashion social enterprise Scotland Re:Design (SR:D), launched a competition for budding designers with a passion for social justice.

The Fashion for Social Change award asked independent artists, crafters and fashion designers living in Scotland to create items with activism for housing as their theme. The pieces were intended to start conversations, share stories, and educate.

The garments also had sustainability at their heart, demonstrating a commitment to minimising waste and extending the life cycle of clothes.

Thanks to support from Shelter Scotland, the eight winning designers had their work featured in the Fashion Festival’s annual spectacular Opening Gala Runway Show at V&A Dundee on Tuesday 15th November, as well as receiving a professional photoshoot for their items, with one designer receiving an award in the SR:D Awards’ Ceremony, which returned post-pandemic for 2022. All eight entries also went on display at the V&A in the ground floor 16th to 20th November.

We would like to thank EventScotland, UNESCO City of Design: Dundee, Shelter Scotland, Overgate Shopping Centre, and V&A Dundee for their support #SRD22 #bringfashionhome #perfectstage #designdundee #ShelterScotland #overgatedundee #vadundee

Workshops

Dreamland Up-Cycling Workshop

A live workshop where attendees watched as Ruby live painted and upcycled jackets and pieces from the Upside Down collection. Ticket holders were encouraged to bring along a piece of clothing they wanted to have upcycled.

Furoshiki wrapping workshop with Law Design Studio and Love & Squalor

Are you looking for a sustainable alternative to gift wrapping? Making a beautiful, personalised fabric gift wrap that can be used year after year could be the perfect solution. In our fabric wrap workshop you’ll choose your fabric, hem the edges, then lovingly embroider the recipient’s initial on to your wrap. These beautiful wraps will become a gift in themselves as they can be used as hair ties, napkins or go on to wrap another gift in the future.

Re(KNIT)wear and care

"Re(KNIT)wear & care" encourages participants to bring along preloved piece(s) of knitwear that are in need of some TLC. Jolene from Jo-AMI will work with you to design and produce a reimagined unique piece of knitwear that you will want to wear over and over! Whether that's turning a jumper into a vest or changing the neckline on the existing jumper by adding a different coloured collar, you will leave with a customised piece of knit with a Jo-AMI touch.

Little Peril Accessories Masterclass

Learn how to make sustainable fashion accessories that last a lifetime. Sewing up our classic ruffle headband and matching tote bag, learn how to sew and create an item that you’ll treasure.

Sashiko mending workshop with ReJean Denim

Plastics exhibition, V&A Dundee

Plastic Lab Talk: Do you know you are wearing plastic?

Plastic Lab, a free drop in space at V&A Dundee, invited visitors to dive into themes and ideas from their plastics exhibition. The public could drop in and explore some of the free things to see, do, and get involved in.

When you think of plastic pollution – do you think fashion and textiles? Probably not, but the truth is many modern clothes are made from plastic. You are probably wearing plastic right now.

To change that, the fashion and textile industries needs a radical makeover. More and more people want to know how our clothes are made and from what. V&A Dundee hosted Clare Campbell, founder of Highlands-based sustainable weaver and zero-waste clothing makers Prickly Thistle for a discussion. Exploring their current projects and ongoing research, and how to get involved! Run by rebels, Prickly Thistle are redesigning the system by driving cutting edge research and innovative social change projects to transform the industry in Scotland and beyond.
